The Dashing Kennel is a hobby kennel that is fully licensed with Kootenai County in Idaho. To be licensed
our kennel is inspected annually by Kootenai County Animal Control Officers. Inspectors check to determine that our
facility still meets the standards set forth in county regulations and that dogs have been vaccinated for rabies as called
for in the Idaho Code. Once the inspection is complete, the renewal must be approved by the Kootenai County Board of
Commissioners.
The current kennel is the 3rd facility that we have built so we have been able to give considerable thought
to the features that work best for us and our dogs. In designing this kennel we took features from other kennels we
have seen and from things that worked for us in the past to make care for the dogs convenient, comfortable and safe.
The Dashing facility consists of a kennel building in which the dogs are housed in runs approximately 6
by 18 feet in size. A 6 by 6 portion of the kennel is completely enclosed with a doggie door to provide access to the
outdoor covered portion of the run. The surface of the runs is covered with pea gravel which allows for good drainage
and is easy on the dogs joints. Cyclone fancing is laid underneath the runs to prevent any dogs from digging out.
The building is divided into three portions, two parts with runs, one with largely females and the other with males.
The third is a utility room with sink, water, dog food storage, medicines and other supplies.
For exercise there are 5 exercise yard (in addition to our back yard) all enclosed with 6 foot cyclone fencing.
Four of the yards are connected directly to the kennel. A double entry or safety area separates each of those runs.
Four of the five runs are approximately a 1/2 acre in size. Twice a day the dogs are let out for exercise and play.
Anything "doggie" is allowed in their exercise yards which is the benefit of having them. We don't worry about the dogs
digging holes or chewing up plants. Meanwhile we have "our" yard for us!
Another feature we added to this kennel to ensure easy access both to unload food and supplies as well as
to load and unload dogs from training. There is a gravel road that enters one of the yards directly in front of the
kennel building. This way we can drive directly up, close the gate, and readily load dogs. It takes us about 15
minutes to load 16 dogs into our truck with this setup.
